"that humans first came to Arkansas some 10,000 to 11,500 years ago, it was not until the expedition of Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto in 1541 that Europeans first arrived in the area."
The city was laid out in blocks and lots, with lots selling for $30 each. The original plat was filed along with 120 deeds, and included a public square and streets. The money raised from the sale of lots was used to construct public buildings. The Saline Crossing Post Office was moved to Benton in 1836. To download a report detailing then to now,

Charles Dove Photograph Collection consists of 3,766 images photographed by
Mr. Dove. A
significant part of the collection is devoted to the Niloak Pottery Company,
which manufactured "Mission Ware" pottery in Benton. Also included in the collection are various scenes of Benton,
local citizens, school pictures, parades, and other subjects. This web site has only 28 of the Dove collection images for download, ranging in size from 100KB to 1.5MB. These photos were chosen for their quality and clarity. For a complete list of
