Citizens of Benton:

The 2010 US Census is rapidly approaching.  I encourage you to remember how important the Census is for many reasons, including that the City of Benton receives “turnback revenues” from the Federal Government and the state of Arkansas based on our population.  Each question helps to determine how more than $400 billion will be allocated to communities across the country for projects such as:  hospitals, job training centers, schools, senior centers, bridges, other-public works projects and emergency services.  These revenues are used to fund a variety of projects in our community.

The 2010 Census form is easier with just 10 questions, such as:  name, sex, age, date of birth, hispanic origin, race, household relationship and if you own or rent.  All of your answers are confidential.  The census DOES NOT ask about the legal status of respondents or their Social Security numbers.  If you complete your forms and send it in no one will come to your house.  If not, you will receive a visit from a census taker.  So please complete the form as soon as you receive it

Additionally, the U S Census Bureau will hire thousands of people throughout the state of Arkansas between now and next spring.  This strong economic shot in the arm is like having several factories open up in the state!  Up to a total of approximately 4,000 people will be on staff during peak times.

According to Dennis Johnson, Regional Director; “This is the largest civilian mobilization of workers in the history of the United States.”  These are good paying, temporary jobs for the field positions of Recruiting Assistants, Crew Leaders, Crew Leader Assistants, Census Takers and Census Clerks.  Amount of pay depends on position and location.  Work related mileage is reimbursed.  There may be some opportunities for advancement.

Positions are available in every community, including Benton.  The U. S. Census Bureau encourages interested persons to apply for these jobs by calling the Toll Free Jobs Line at 1-866-861-2010.

Sincerely,

Rick Holland
Mayor, City of Benton
